On October 2nd 2013, MacKinnon made his NHL debut with the Avalanche becoming the youngest player in franchise history at just 18. At the end of his rookie season, he finished with 39 assists and 24 goals, for a total of 63 points, the most for a rookie in that season. In that season, MacKinnon was awarded the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie, becoming the youngest player to win the award.
