In the second period of a tied game with Montreal, John Tavares took a pass from Kadri down the ice to make a slick move around Montreal’s Matthew Peca. Tavares cut to the middle of the ice sending a hard snap shot over Carey Price’s blocker to give the Maple Leafs the lead with just under two minutes to go in the second period. Montreal ended up tying the game but Matthews ended the game shortly into overtime giving the Maple Leafs their first win of the year in their home opener.
